Welcome

The Sullivan Review is a paid weekly newspaper published in Dushore, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, founded in February, 1878. In its 137 year history, The Sullivan Review has had numerous publishers and has merged with several other county newspapers that have come and gone.

In September, 1966, Dr. Thomas (T.W.) and Stefana Shoemaker purchased The Sullivan Review from the Towanda Printing Co. saving it from being folded into the Towanda Daily Review.

The Shoemakers revamped the format and initiated many new features, including moving the printing date to Wednesdays instead of Friday. Also, new weekly columns were produced including The Satterfield Flyer, a column on life in Sullivan County and adventures of a country editor and country veterinarian by co-editor Dr. T.W. Shoemaker.

The Sullivan Review published the Sullivan County Tourist Guide, the first such supplement published in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Some 30,000 copies have been printed yearly since 1967. Following the success of the first Spring/Summer Tourist Guide, a fall issue was added in 1969.

“The Sully” as the weekly is affectionately called, also features local photographs of current and historical interest, including high school sports, hunting and fishing and outdoor activities.

Sullivan County includes two state parks–Ricketts Glen and Worlds End, the Sullivan County Fair, the Pennsylvania Bow-hunters Festival, winter horse–drawn Sleigh Rally, and a famous ice toboggan slide at Eagles Mere.

Sullivan County has a population of just over 6,000 persons, has thousands of acres of State Forest Land, State Game Land and state Fish Commission Land. The county is spanned by the 55–mile Loyalsock Trail. Historical museums are open to the public in Laporte, the county seat, and Eagles Mere. Sonestown is home to a war memorial museum.
